MOPED-BUS Mass Transit Alternative!!
Is this the future of Mass Transit? Vote to let us know!
Characteristics of Moped-Bus:
- It's a bus pulling a trailer! Mopeds (and bicycles, segways, ramparts, etc) ride on the trailer. Commuters ride on the bus, their hands free to read, work a computer, etc. A simple MopedBus design is shown above. More complex designs are shown
here and here. Note that most two-segmented city buses are actually buses pulling trailers, so this technology is not unprecedented.
The Moped-Bus travels ONLY on the highways, in the carpool lanes. Riders travel to the Moped-Bus stations on city or suburb streets on their mopeds. Stations are every 5-20 miles apart, located just off the highways: the best compromise for convenience and speed. Example Moped-Bus routes and stations are shown here for Honolulu and the San Francisco Bay Areas. This commute-architecture means that for many commuters Moped-Bus may be faster than their autos!
Similar arrival frequency and monthly bus-pass costs as current municipal bus lines. MopedBus will lease mopeds to commuters who don't want to buy one right away. Moped full-body rain-suits are very light and compact and fit under the seat, unlike motorcycle rain-suits, because mopeds travel at less than 40 mph.
Moped-Bus can start small, for example by taking college students to a University and back. Thus, more ambitious and expensive business plans can be taylored to fit actual market growth. This means less risk for investors.
All Moped-Buses will be outfitted with transponders so anyone with web access or a cell-phone can obtain estimated arrival times and current locations of all buses. No more waiting at the bus or train stop wondering what happened!
Advantages: Unlike ordinary mass-transit, MopedBus leaves you with a vehicle at home AND at work for maximum transportation flexibility yet without the cost, congestion, and pollution problems of automobiles. There's no need for expensive new infrastructure, because MopedBus uses existing highway infrastructure (compare that to ordinary mass-transit). Start-up costs are small, yet bus routes are easily expandable. Reduces the need for two or more cars per family. Best of all, its easy on the environment and reduces our nations foreign oil-dependence.
